When I started developing web-based applications, I have used different languages like PHP, Java, Perl and ASP. From all these web scripting languages I have grown a liking to PHP for several reasons. Some of those reasons include: PHP runs in different platforms (Linux, Windows, Sun, Mac …); majority of the Internet hosting services offers PHP for free and pre-installed; and most of all — PHP is very easy to use and has a rich number of built-in functions for developing applications.
When I went looking for Content Management software, I decided to use Joomla! (still Mambo at that time) because of it is easy to use, easy to install, flexible, well-supported and most of all very easy to extend. The first extension I have developed for Joomla! has been a module to display daiily Philippine stock market information. I have also decided to develop a Joomla! component called Community Map Manager for www.ortigas.com (A website that I maintain).
